When do you need a permit for a dumpster?
The test is whose land it sits on. On private property, including a driveway, a yard or a parking lot you control, a permit is generally not required. The moment any part of the container occupies a street, a sidewalk, a verge or a public parking space, that placement needs confirming with the City of Elgin before the truck arrives. Who is responsible for getting it?
The site owner or the contractor running the job, unless your quote explicitly says otherwise. We can tell you the footprint of the container, what the truck needs for access, and how long it will stand there. What we cannot do is state on your behalf what a particular municipality will require, because that varies and it changes. Ask the city directly, quote the dimensions we give you, and get the answer in writing before you fix a delivery date.
What will the city want to know?
Usually four things: the exact location, the dimensions of the container, how long it will be there, and whether it affects a traffic lane or a pedestrian route. Have the size ready. A 10 yard dumpster is roughly 12 feet long, a 20 yard about 22 feet, a 30 yard about 22 feet with higher walls, and a 40 yard around 22 to 24 feet and taller again. How long does a permit take?
Long enough that it should be the first thing you sort rather than the last. Permit turnaround is the most common cause of a moved delivery date on jobs we quote, and it is entirely avoidable. Start the application as soon as the job dates firm up, not the week before. If the work runs longer than the permit period, extend it before it lapses, in the same way you would extend the container hire itself.
What else does a street placement need?
Visibility and protection. A container in a traffic lane normally needs reflective markings or cones, and sometimes lighting overnight, which is where a light tower or simpler marking comes in depending on what the city asks for. Pedestrian routes have to stay usable, so a container that blocks a sidewalk usually requires a marked walkway around it. None of that is our call to make for you, but all of it is worth raising with the city in the first conversation rather than the third.
Does the container size change the requirement?
It changes the practicalities more than the principle. What about weight and what goes in?
Separate from permits, but they arrive on the same day. Does the rest of the site need permissions too?
Often. If the job also puts restrooms out front, the same right of way question applies to them. Crew numbers are governed separately by OSHA 1926.51(c), which requires one toilet facility for up to 20 workers and then one seat and one urinal per 40 as the crew grows. How do you avoid the common problems?
Confirm the permit before the delivery date. Measure the space, including the truck approach rather than the container footprint alone. Keep the collection route clear on the day, because a blocked container is a wasted trip that gets billed. Tell us if anything unusual is going in the load.
